Compare the headboard and duvet upright

Bedding usually lies horizontally, but the pillows and turned-back duvet sit close to the headboard. Hold the proposed upholstery sample where those fabrics meet. A match made with samples flat on a table may look different once one surface is upright in the bedroom light.

If the duvet has a small blue print, an oatmeal or muted blue headboard could provide a quiet background. The choice depends on the room's other colours and whether you want the bed to read as one group or several distinct layers.

Plain does not mean texture-free. A coarse weave, smooth cloth and velvet-like surface catch light differently. If the bedding is already detailed, choose a headboard texture you enjoy at close range without needing another strong pattern.

Consider the headboard's shape and stitching. Buttons, channels or a curved outline add visual detail before the fabric is chosen. A heavily patterned cloth can obscure those features, while a plain one may emphasise them.

Make room for future bedding changes

A headboard is usually changed less often than duvet covers. Compare the fabric with two or three bedding sets you already use, not just the new one in the shopping basket. A colour that works across those sets may be more useful than a perfect match to a single print.

Read the upholstery care guidance and think about contact with hair products, hands and everyday use. Removable and fixed covers have different maintenance possibilities. Do not assume a light colour is washable or a dark one cannot show marks.

If ordering a complete headboard, check dimensions and the bed manufacturer's compatibility requirements. For reupholstery, use a competent supplier who can advise on suitable upholstery materials and applicable requirements; decorative curtain cloth is not automatically appropriate.

View the sample beside the wall as well as the bedding. The headboard sits between them and needs a comfortable relationship with both. Once those three surfaces work together, keep extra cushions optional. The upholstered shape may already provide all the structure the bed needs.
