Ask for the open drawing

Find the full sleeping footprint, including any headboard, backrest or support legs that remain outside the mattress. Compare it with the closed sofa dimensions. Some mechanisms pull forward; others fold the back down or require the sofa to move away from the wall. The opening method determines which space must stay available.

Read the operating instructions before buying if the mechanism is unfamiliar. A demonstration helps establish whether you can use it comfortably and where to stand. Do not assume that a design described as easy to open will suit every person or a tight corner at home.

Add a route, not just a mattress

Mark the open bed on the floor and walk from the doorway to the sleeping sides. Include nearby drawers and the room door. A mattress that just fits between two pieces of furniture may leave the person using it unable to move normally once bedding is added.

For a shared sofa bed, decide how each person gets out. One side against a wall may be acceptable for an occasional arrangement, but it should be a considered compromise. Check the foot end as well: a table that fits there during the day may need another home at night.

Provide a reachable place for a drink, glasses and a light switch. A side table that served the sofa might no longer be in the right position when the bed opens. A small movable surface can work if it stands steadily and does not occupy the route to the door.

Account for everything displaced

Loose sofa cushions, a coffee table and decorative pillows need somewhere to go. Measure their temporary storage instead of assuming the room will absorb them. Moving them to the hall is not a suitable answer if they narrow a route or block access elsewhere.

Bedding also takes space before and after use. Check whether the sofa's own compartment can hold the items you need; some storage sections are shallower than they appear. Allow bedding to be dry before storing it and follow the care instructions for the textiles and furniture.

The final test is a complete conversion. Open the mechanism, arrange bedding, put the displaced pieces away and walk through the room. Then reverse the process. If it requires several heavy moves, compare a different mechanism or a simpler room layout. The sofa bed should earn its second function in real use, not only in its product description.

Check whether the bedding can remain in place when the sofa closes. Some designs allow particular thin bedding to stay inside; others require it to be removed. Follow the actual instructions and do not force the mechanism around a bulky duvet. This affects the amount of separate storage needed and the effort involved in daily use. For a bed opened every night, the complete routine matters much more than it does for a few visits a year. Try the mattress and the sitting position too: both functions deserve attention before purchase.
