See what each finish reveals
Clear glass makes the bulb and the structure around it part of the design. Opal glass has a milky appearance that obscures more of the detail inside. These are different visual effects, not a simple ranking from better to worse. The right choice depends on where the lamp sits and whether the visible source is comfortable from the nearby seats.
A clear shade can feel visually light when switched off because you see through it. Once lit, the bulb may become the most noticeable element in the room. An opal shade may read as a more solid object by day and a broader glowing form at night. Look at both states before deciding.
Some products combine a clear outer shade with an inner diffuser. Others use patterned, frosted or tinted glass. Product names can be imprecise, so inspect photographs of the lamp illuminated and read how its light source is screened. Do not assume every glass globe behaves in the same way.
Check the view from the chair
Place yourself at roughly the height and distance you will use at home. A bulb that looks charming from above on a shop shelf may be stark when it is level with your eyes. Opal glass can soften the appearance, but a very bright globe can still be uncomfortable close to a seat.
Compare the light that reaches the surrounding area. The lamp may be intended as a decorative object rather than the main reading source. If you need light on a book, test that job specifically. A beautiful glow across the glass tells you little about the amount and direction of light on the page.
The bulb needs to satisfy the manufacturer's requirements for fitting, type, size and maximum power. In a clear lamp its shape may also become a visual choice, but appearance must remain within those limits. A decorative oversized bulb is not suitable merely because you like how it looks through the glass.
Account for reflections and cleaning
Clear glass can reflect windows, other lamps and the objects around it. Those highlights may be part of its appeal, or they may make a busy shelf look busier. Opal glass tends to conceal the interior more, yet its surface still needs cleaning according to the manufacturer's care guidance.
Look at how the shade is removed, if it is removable. A large delicate globe above a crowded table can be awkward to handle. Avoid choosing a design that you cannot safely maintain in its intended position. Set aside a clear surface before any permitted removal, with the lamp unplugged and cool.
Try the lamp alongside the room's existing finishes. Clear glass beside a mirrored console produces a different impression from the same lamp on matt timber. Opal glass against a white wall may blend in by day while a darker wall gives it a strong outline. Choose the effect you enjoy in that actual setting rather than the finish that happens to dominate the current shop display.
