Prepare the textiles for storage
Follow the care label for cleaning and drying before putting an item away. Check that it is fully dry, including thick seams and folded areas. A storage bag cannot correct moisture left in the fabric, and a cupboard is not a substitute for finishing the drying process.
Inspect the textile before folding it. Stains, damage or signs of pests need the appropriate response before the item is stored with other belongings. Avoid adding strongly scented products as a way to make an uncertain condition seem fresh. Use treatments only where they are suitable for the fabric and follow their instructions.
Match the container to the fabric and place
A breathable fabric bag can keep dust off items in a suitable dry cupboard. A rigid box may protect shape and make stacking easier, but it also needs enough room to be lifted out. Check the material's care guidance before using compression or vacuum storage; not every filling or textile benefits from being tightly compressed.
Measure the shelf and the filled bag, not just the empty packaging. A soft bag bulges, and its handles may need extra space. Keep the load manageable for the person retrieving it. Several smaller bags can be easier than one large bundle containing every spare duvet.
Avoid an unassessed loft, garage or damp external cupboard simply because there is room. Temperature and moisture conditions vary, and the contents may be out of sight for months. A location within the ordinary living space is easier to inspect, though it still needs to be appropriate for the textile.
Keep a seasonal bag distinct from items awaiting repair or cleaning. Otherwise it is easy to open the collection months later and find the same unfinished task. A separate labelled place for those items keeps the stored bedding ready for use when the temperature changes.
Make the next changeover obvious
Label the size and contents where similar bags cannot be distinguished. Put seasonal items together without mixing them with everyday laundry waiting to be sorted. When a blanket is needed again, it should be possible to identify and retrieve it without opening every container. Leave a little space around the arrangement so taking one bag out does not bring the rest of the cupboard with it.
