Measure the way out
Measure from the floor to the lowest obstruction under the bed, including side rails, centre supports and fittings. A box that fits beneath the mattress base may not pass under the outer frame. Check the whole route from its resting place to the edge where you will pull it out.
Allow for the floor surface. Wheels can sink into a thick carpet or catch at a rug edge, and a rigid box may scrape a delicate floor. Choose a base suitable for the surface and follow the container's guidance. Test with a modest load before filling it completely.
Measure how far the container must emerge before its contents can be reached. A long box may fit beneath the bed but require nearly its entire length outside it before the lid opens. A shorter pair can make more sense even if it leaves a small unused area near the centre support. Also check which side has the easiest approach for the person using it. The apparently symmetrical space under a double bed can have very different access once wardrobes, bedside pieces and the room door are included.
Choose contents by frequency
Seasonal textiles or spare bedding can suit under-bed storage if the space is clean and dry. Frequently used objects may be frustrating there, particularly if reaching them requires kneeling or moving a bedside table. Match the location to the user as well as to the object's size.
Avoid one oversized box simply because it uses the most volume. Several smaller containers can be easier to handle, though they need clear categories so belongings are not scattered between them. Put the handle or opening towards the accessible side and leave enough room to grip it.
The lid matters. Some boxes have split lids that can open partly while the box remains beneath the bed; others must come all the way out. Check which action the room permits. A container that slides out but cannot open beside the bed is still an awkward choice.
Keep the bed's requirements intact
Do not obstruct any ventilation or clearances specified by the bed or mattress manufacturer. Under-bed capacity is not a reason to pack every void tightly. Keep items away from moving parts on adjustable beds and follow the relevant product instructions.
Clean the space periodically and check stored textiles before returning them. Put only dry items away and use containers appropriate to their care requirements. A sealed box cannot solve damp conditions beneath a bed or elsewhere in the room.
Try the arrangement with the bedside furniture in its normal position. Retrieve the box, take out an item and put everything back. If the sequence involves lifting the bed or moving a heavy cabinet, choose a smaller box, another access side or a different storage location. Under-bed storage should use spare space without making the belongings effectively disappear.
