Describe the household honestly
A sofa used by a shedding dog, young children and somebody eating lunch has a different routine from an occasional chair in a spare room. Write down the common forms of contact before choosing a fabric: hair, claws, crumbs, muddy clothing or frequent washing of covers.
This does not produce a single best material. Fibre, weave, finish and construction all matter, and product claims vary. Ask the supplier about the specific fabric's intended use rather than relying on a broad label such as pet-friendly.
Look closely at loops, loose textures and decorative threads. Consider how they may interact with the household's use, but do not assume a smooth-looking fabric is automatically resistant to every snag or mark.
Test appearance with a real sample
Bring the sample into the room and look at it beside the floor and other textiles. A colour close to a pet's coat may make some hairs less visible, but it does not reduce the need for cleaning. Very plain dark and very plain pale fabrics can reveal different kinds of debris.
Handle the sample and ask about approved cleaning methods. Do not scratch or deliberately stain a borrowed cutting unless the supplier has invited that kind of test. A small experiment would not establish the long-term performance of the finished sofa anyway.
If covers are removable, check whether they are actually washable, how they should dry and whether replacements can be ordered. A zip may be intended for assembly rather than routine home cleaning.
Plan protection without hiding the whole sofa
A washable throw on a favourite sleeping spot can be useful if it stays safely in place and its care routine suits the household. Choose a size that covers the intended area without trailing into a route or tangling around furniture legs.
Keep any stain-treatment advice tied to the particular upholstery. An online remedy suitable for one cloth may mark another or affect its finish. Follow the maker's instructions and seek product-specific help for difficult stains.
The aim is a sofa you can use without constant anxiety, while accepting that textiles in daily service will need care. Choose the fabric whose documented maintenance and construction fit that reality, rather than one that promises to make the household's habits irrelevant.
