Look closely at the upholstery
Grey sofas are rarely neutral in quite the same way. One reads blue in daylight, another has a brown cast and a third is a mix of light and dark yarns. Take a removable cushion to the window, if it is easy to move, or compare a paint sample directly against the arm. The sofa photograph on an old order confirmation is not a reliable colour reference.
Next decide whether the sofa should settle into the room or become a more visible shape. A similar-toned wall can soften its outline. A noticeably lighter, darker or warmer wall gives it a clearer edge. This is often a more useful distinction than asking which colours universally go with grey.
Make one substantial change
Suppose the room has a medium grey sofa, pale carpet and white walls. Adding six small grey accessories will not change its character very much. A muted clay wall, a large blue rug or full-length olive curtains could each introduce a different direction. Try one of those large moves on a sample board or with a borrowed textile before buying a collection of finishing pieces.
With a cool grey sofa, warm timber and a rust-coloured cushion can make an appealing contrast. A beige-grey sofa might sit more quietly beside soft green and cream. These are combinations to test, not rules about undertones. The room's light and the exact fabrics matter more than the colour names.
If the sofa has a pronounced weave, use that texture as part of the arrangement. Smooth cotton, a flatter woven rug or a plain painted wall may provide enough variety without another busy pattern. Conversely, a very smooth sofa can take a textured cushion or throw without every object competing for attention.
Repeat selectively
Once you choose a supporting colour, repeat it somewhere at a different scale. A blue rug might have a small echo in a print; a clay wall might connect with a cushion containing a little of the same tone. You do not need identical shades scattered evenly around the room.
Leave some areas without the new accent. A cream lampshade or plain wood side table gives the eye a pause and allows the sofa to remain part of a usable sitting space. If you must remove a mountain of cushions every time you sit down, the styling has overtaken the furniture's purpose.
Keep a sample of the sofa fabric with your shortlisted paint and textile samples. Seeing the real materials together helps prevent a sequence of almost-right purchases that individually look lovely but pull the room in different directions.
