Look at the pole and rings
Eyelet curtains pass directly over a pole through rings built into the fabric. Pencil-pleat curtains normally hang from hooks attached to rings or suitable track gliders. If you already have a track, an eyelet curtain is not a direct substitute just because its colour and drop are right.
Check the existing hardware before shopping. Note the pole diameter, the available rings or gliders, the brackets and the space between the pole and wall. Compare those details with the curtain manufacturer's requirements. An eyelet that technically fits over a pole may still be unsuitable if the folds cannot move freely in the available space.
Compare the shape at the top
Eyelets tend to create broader, regular folds around the pole. Pencil pleats form a gathered heading with smaller folds. In a plain fabric this difference can be a large part of the curtain's appearance; in a strong print it changes how the pattern is broken up.
Think about the room's other lines. A simple pole and broad folds may suit a relatively plain arrangement. A gathered heading can sit comfortably with older furniture or a more varied room. Neither heading belongs exclusively to one style of house, so choose by the actual combination rather than a label such as modern or traditional.
Look at the curtains open as well as closed. The stack at the side, exposed rings and the amount of visible pole all contribute to the result.
Measure after choosing the heading
Do not transfer a drop measurement from one heading to another without checking its starting point. Eyelet fabric rises above the pole, while hooked headings hang in relation to the ring or track. Follow the chosen retailer's measuring guide so that the finished hem reaches the intended place.
Check whether any supplied hooks, rings or other parts are included in the order. A ready-made pair may arrive without everything needed for your particular pole. Confirm compatibility before taking the old curtains down.
If the existing pole works well and you want a straightforward replacement, keeping the same type of heading can reduce the number of decisions. If changing the heading solves a real problem with movement, appearance or stacking space, plan the hardware change at the same time. The fabric and support system are one working arrangement.
