Name the floor precisely
Timber, laminate, vinyl, tile and carpet do not all have the same surface or care requirements. Before buying underlay, identify the floor beneath the rug and read any available flooring guidance. A product described broadly as non-slip is not enough information for every finish.
Check what the underlay maker says about that floor and the rug construction. If the floor has been newly finished, ask when coverings can be placed on it and which materials are allowed. Do not assume that a soft pad cannot mark or affect a surface.
For underfloor heating, confirm the combined arrangement with the relevant manufacturers. A rug and underlay introduce layers above the floor, so each product's compatibility and any system limits matter.
Use a size that supports the rug properly
The underlay should follow the product's fitting instructions, including any recommended distance from the rug edge. An exposed pad looks untidy and can become a separate trip point; a very small pad may leave large unsupported edges.
If trimming is permitted, work from measured dimensions rather than cutting by eye while the rug is in place. Keep joins flat where more than one piece is allowed. Do not create overlapping ridges beneath a thin rug to use up spare material.
Consider the whole thickness near doors and furniture legs. A thick pad may make a rug feel different underfoot but can also reduce clearance or change how a chair sits.
Check the result during use
After placing the rug, walk across it and move nearby chairs normally. The rug should remain stable without rippling or exposing corners. If it moves, seek advice about the specific pairing rather than adding household adhesive tape without checking its suitability.
Lift the rug for cleaning according to the manufacturers' advice and check the floor below. Dirt trapped under any covering still needs attention. Keep the underlay's care details with the rug information so cleaning one part does not damage the other.
Some products explicitly list broad floor compatibility; IKEA's STOPP FILT is one example with its own stated uses and care instructions. That statement belongs to that product, not to every pad that looks similar. Choose from documented compatibility and the actual room, rather than treating all grey underlays as interchangeable.
